Mara Albrecht is a historian and postdoctoral Research Associate affiliated with the Research Unit on Voluntariness since December 2022. She is holding a one-year scholarship and her research focuses on the modern history of the Middle East, imperial and colonial history, urban and spatial history, political cultures, urban violence, and memories of violence. Her dissertation on Political Parties and Political Culture in Lebanon during the civil war and the post-war period was published in German in 2017 (LIT).

The Central Citizens’ Defence Committee emerged in Belfast at the beginning of the conflict in Northern Ireland in 1969. It provides a case study in voluntary policing from a politically left position and in opposition to the state and official law enforcement.
Since December 2022, Mara Albrecht is holding our “Initialization Sholarship Voluntariness”. For at least one year Mara will be part of our team and will be developing a new project on the global history of voluntariness.
